I remember heavy summer evenings when the tired sun would sink into the shadows of the horizon. When the last remnants of day would meet to mingle with the evening for a few moments before parting to say goodbye. The stars would begin to appear in the lavender twilight that gently gave way to the deep purple of the night. Laughter and voices of my parents and neighbors chatting mixed with the sounds of crickets carried through the air on a hot evening breeze; as the other children on the block and I played just out of reach of their shadows.
A simplified definition many people often use for the word “self-esteem” is that it’s “How we feel about ourselves.” But self-esteem includes broader and more important parts of ourselves, so I would prefer to define it this way: High, or natural self-esteem is manifested in a wonderful feeling of inner-balance, grounded on self-acceptance and a healthy, comforting self-respect towards yourself. This is very different from self-confidence which is grounded in what you know you can deal with and accomplish.
One would come across many treatises on personality. ‘What is Personality’, ‘Personality Building’, ‘Magnetic Personality’, ‘Personality Cult’, ‘Personality Disorder’, are some of the well known captions. They prescribe and recommend many personality aids, improvement recipes and cures and correctives as if personality is a simple and common trait which can be acquired easily; or it is some thing objective which can be everybody’s property. Personality is not such a common and cheap human property. In philosophic sense personality is systematized, integrated and disciplined self. There are three important aspects of human personality namely physical, mental and moral or ethical. A harmonious and conscious development of all the three, is the test of good or balanced personality.
Everybody likes happy articles that make us feel good. This isn’t one of them. This one bypasses the part of you that wants to escape, and approaches the subliminal, the mature part that understands that there is no escape. This is the part that wants so badly to be free from all of this, the part that wants to develop that great passion that creates divergence, the divergence that approaches creativity, which in turn approaches eternity.

Quitting smoking is an admirable goal. But you can be sure of running into some problems along the way. It is difficult to be persistent when everything you try seems to fail. And many people who don’t realize immediate results from their efforts are easily swayed toward giving up. It doesn’t have to be that way. Let’s begin by emphasizing how important it is to your self-worth that you never allow yourself to give up fighting for something you know and believe to be right.

After the Quantum Leap event (one of my 3 day programs) in Las Vegas some time ago, I was asked about the tragic shooting at the Amish schoolhouse. I’m glad it was asked because I saw a very important principle put into action by the Amish community… The next day after the shooting, the Amish community of Lancaster County told the killer’s family that they forgave him for what he’d done. That’s right. They forgave him…You may be thinking “But James, how could they?” Well, here’s the deal… You don’t forgive for the other person. You forgive for yourself. Now I’ll ask you, “How could they not forgive him?”
On a Sunday in early December last year, our pastor spoke about Mary, the mother of Jesus. He said something about how perhaps the Roman Catholics talk a bit too much about Mary’s role and the Protestants do not speak about it enough. That is probably true. As part of Pastor John’s sermon, he showed some clips about a teen girl discovering she was pregnant. He reminded us that Mary was that young, and that being with child without a husband at that time and in that culture was not good. She could have been stoned to death. And yet her faith in God was strong enough to be courageous about this. |
